Acclaimed stage, TV and film actor David Schofield returns to the Exchange after a 17 year break to play failed song-and-dance man Archie Rice in John Osborne’s THE ENTERTAINER.
Set in a clapped out end-of-the pier style music hall, Osborne’s scathing state-of-the-nation 1957 classic, comes complete with live songs and dance, specially composed incidental music by Tayo Akinbode (THE GLASS MENAGERIE, HAUNTED) and choreographed movement by Stuart Hopps, best known for his work on the legendary film, THE WICKER MAN.

Ian Brown- 19th December 2009
As the lead singer of The Stone Roses, Ian Brown was responsible for singing some of the most well-respected and influential songs by a British band in recent years. Following the group’s demise in 1996, Ian started work on a solo record. Unfinished Monkey Business was released in 1998, to critical acclaim and commercial success with singles My Star, Corpses and Can’t See Me all achieving chart success. The album was followed by Golden Greats in 2000, Music Of The Spheres in 2001 and 2004’s Solarized, all of which have been well received by the music buying public. Ian has managed what few frontmen of successful bands can and achieved credible solo success away from the Stone Roses. Long may he continue to do so.

The first major exhibition of women artists and Surrealism to be held in Europe, Angels of Anarchy, opens this autumn at Manchester Art Gallery. Fantasies, Follies and Disasters: The Prints of Francisco de Goya- Until February 2010
A new exhibition featuring a compelling selection of rarely-displayed etchings by Francisco de Goya. The works are all drawn from Manchester Art Gallery’s superb collections, and have not been exhibited together as a group for over 20 years. The gallery’s collection of graphic works by the artist is recognised for being one of the most important in the world.

HomeGrown: the story of UK hip hop- Until March 2010
HomeGrown: The Story of UK Hip Hop is the first major exhibition to chronicle, in depth, the development of the UK Hip Hop scene.

Looking back over three decades, the exhibition tells the story of how a generation of youth took the spirit of the Bronx block party and fused it with their own uniquely British influences. In doing so it shows how a US subculture featuring art, politics, rhyme, dance and music was adopted, adapted and embraced to create a powerful, complex, cultural force, this side of the Atlantic.

Working with the UK’s most influential figures in Hip Hop the exhibition brings together the rare, remarkable and irreplaceable in Hip Hop photography, music, film and fashion from the best private collections.

Cornerhouse will present the first major UK survey of Polish artist Artur Zmijewski, one of the most consistently challenging, provocative and profoundly thoughtful artists in Europe at the moment. The exhibition will include the major installation work, Repetition (2005), in which Zmijewski revisits Professor Zimbardo’s 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment.

David Wightman: Behemoth and other new paintings- Until 16th December 2009
Local artist David Wightman appropriates images from both geometric abstraction and classical landscape painting – motifs associated with aspiration, idealism, and modernity. Using collaged wallpaper, which signi?es the domestic, he personalises these images and renders them nostalgic – capturing both their beauty and banality and the desires they represent. The colours and patterns he uses in his work link aspirational working class homes and high art.

This is the first major exhibition held by the Imperial War Museum to examine the experience of prisoners of war during the Second World War, the qualities and endurance called upon to survive and the lasting legacy of an often harsh environment.

Panoramica: Gayle Chong Kwan- 21st November 2009 – 4th April 2010
Enter a world of strange new landscapes made from food and other discarded materials. This exhibition brings together a number of pieces which explore aspects of the panorama in photographic, installation and sound work. Gayle Chong Kwan’s work is influenced by contemporary tourism, waste and the personal and global politics of food. The result is a series of mythical imaginary panoramas and dioramas which in many ways echo the detail and sweeping historic vistas of the Gallery’s much-loved Oldham Panorama of 1876.
